ARPEPE is one of the most revered wine estates in Italy — a Valtellina house famous for aging Nebbiolo far longer than anyone else and for refusing to release wine before it's ready. This grappa is the byproduct of that patience. It's made from the pomace of ARPEPE's Rocce Rosse, a single-vineyard wine from the Sassella subzone of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG, 100% Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo) grown on steep terraced slopes in the Alps. Because ARPEPE ferments with an unusually long maceration, the pomace arrives at the distillery unusually rich — and the Invitti family, distilling in Sondrio since 1948 across four generations and now handling roughly 80% of all Valtellina pomace, runs it through their all-copper continuous column still heated by controlled steam for a gentler, more precise distillation. Vintage-dated, from a single harvest, then rested two years in stainless steel with no added sugar, caramel, or anything else, bottled at 43% ABV. It took the Gran Menzione d'Oro at the 2018 Spirito di Vite competition. Expect mountain flowers and rainwater on the nose, opening into a soft, rounded palate of stewed fruit, kumquat, chalky wedding candies, and black pepper, finishing gently bitter with eucalyptus and bay leaf.
